Houses
A smaller part of what we do, and we would rather say that than pretend otherwise. The instruments and the habits are the same.
The measurements do not change
A house is a smaller building with the same physics. Charge verified by superheat and subcooling rather than by pressure alone. Combustion tested and the figures recorded. Static pressure measured. Duct leakage measured rather than inspected. Airflow checked at the registers that are actually complained about.
What changes is the scale, not the standard. If anything, houses get read more carefully, because there is one system doing everything rather than six sharing the load.
Six things
No cooling and no heat, checked in order of cost, with the reading that proves the answer shown to you rather than described.
Once a year, with combustion tested on gas heat and every figure written down so next year’s visit has something to compare against.
Leakage and static pressure measured, then sealed or repaired where the measurement says to rather than where it looks untidy.
Measured at the registers in the rooms that are complained about, and compared against a room that is fine.
Primary drain, secondary pan and float switch, tested. With a coil above a ceiling this is the cheapest insurance in the house.
Sized from the house, permitted and tested, with the ductwork assessed before anything is specified.
When we are the wrong people
If you want somebody who will be at your house within two hours on a Sunday in August, that is not us and we would rather you knew now. Our crews are mostly on scheduled commercial work, and a domestic emergency competes with a building full of people.
What we are good at is the unglamorous version: a house measured properly, a fault diagnosed with an instrument rather than an opinion, and a replacement specified so that it works. If that is what you want, we are worth waiting for. If it is not, there are contractors in this town who are set up for speed and we will say so on the phone.
